Israel to release 22 from Khiam
Daily Star, Jan 4 1999
Israel has agreed to release 22 Lebanese detainees from Khiam prison,
Lebanon's chief representative at the truce-monitoring committee in the
south announced on Monday. In a statement, Brigadier Maher Toufeili
said he informed President Emile Lahoud and Prime Minister Salim Hoss
about the development, adding that the detainees will be handed over
to the authorities via the International Committee for the Red Cross.
He did not say exactly when the detainees will be released. "It will be in
a few days," he said.
More than 170 detainees are held at Khiam, which is run by Israel's proxy
militia, the South Lebanon Army, and is notorious for poor conditions and
the torture of detainees. On Dec. 27, Israel released five Lebanese from
prisons in the Jewish state.
